October 28th is always a hard day for me because eight years ago today, something happened that changed my life forever! Back in 2013, I was just starting high school and I was so exited about beginning a new chapter in my life! There was something missing though. My best friend from preschool, Darby Emma Jones wasn't here to see everything that was going on in my life. Darby was diagnosed with Lukimia for the fourth time and was fighting hard to survive up in Birmingham.

I was able to see her twice the summer before when she was able to come home for a few days. The second time she was home, I remember the two of us sitting in my room and Darby making me promise her that if she didn't beat this sickness again, that I would keep going on without her. I of course agreed not thinking that I would actually have to keep that promise so soon after that. That september, Darby and I both were nominated for homecoming court even though she was still up in Birmingham and things were not looking good, but I was still holding out hope that she would eventually come back home to me. That was the first time I was nominated for homecoming court. I eventually made it all four years of high school. That was such an honor for me!

By October time I knew that she was dying so I tried to prepare myself as much as possible for when it did happen. Darby ended up dying at 1:30 pm on October 28th, 2013. I found out the next morning when my bus driver announced it over the speakers of our bus. Everyone was devestated because Darby was loved by everyone! I struggled with losing my best friend for a while, but I got through it because I was surrounded by so many friends and family who constantly reminded me that I was loved and never alone.

Today I will not reflect on her death, but rather I will focus on the life she lived and the legacy she left behind. Darby was always smiling and there was a light inside of her that not even cancer or death could put out. Everyone loved how positive she was even on her worst days. Darby would always say, "Be brave like me" and boy was she brave. She always made friends wherever she was no matter the circumstances. Darby was always telling adventure stories and that she was going to be famous one day.

I am thankful for the time that I did have with Darby even though it was short. Darby taught me lessons on how to live your life to the fullest despite the circumatances! I continue to miss my friend every day, but I know that I will see her again one say and that comforts me. Thank you Darby for everything that you taught us!
